Property Tax Deductions / Forms

If you meet a set of requirements, set by the state, there are tax deductions of $250 annually available for the following: veterans, surviving spouses of veterans, 100% disabled veterans, disabled persons, surviving spouses of disabled persons, senior citizens and surviving spouse of senior citizens. (FORMS are available below)

Among the requirements for any of these deductions is New Jersey citizenship/residency and property ownership as of October 1st of the year prior to the year in which the deduction is requested. Some, but not all, of the additional requirements are (for example)

Senior Citizen Deduction $250

  • Applicant must be age 65 or greater by December 31 of the pretax year.
  • Income cannot exceed $10,000 annually combined for the household, over and above your Social Security or state pension.

Disabled Deduction $250

  • Applicant must be 100% totally and permanently disabled.
  • Income cannot exceed $10,000 annually combined for the household, over and above your Social Security or state pension.

Veteran Deduction $250

  • Applicant must be the owner or part owner of the property for which the deduction is claimed.
  • A veteran must have have been honorably discharged and had active duty.

100% Disabled Veteran (100% Property Tax Exemption)

  • The dwelling of a disabled veteran or surviving spouse / surviving civil union partner / surviving domestic partner of a disabled veteran or serviceperson may be eligible for exemption.
  • Income and ownership requirements are the same as the original deduction.
  • The deceased spouse had to be eligible for the deduction at the time of death and the surviving spouse must not have remarried.

Please note that the above requirements are only part of the overall requirements for the various deduction programs. If you qualify under these initial requirements, please contact the Assessor’s Office and application forms with full eligibility requirements will be mailed to you.

Please be aware that programs such as Anchor (fka Homestead Rebate) and other tax relief Programs are administered by the State of New Jersey and not handled by the Assessor’s Office.  Please see the link below under “State Property Tax Benefits” for further information.
